About Anlaug Amanda Djupvik
Anlaug Amanda Djupvik was born in Førde, a small town in Norway. She grew up in an even smaller village called Leikong. This village is on an island named Gurskøy, south of the city of Ålesund.
Her Journey to Becoming an Astronomer
Anlaug started her university studies in August 1986. She went to the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics in Oslo. In January 1992, she earned her Master of Science degree. For her master's project, she studied how Jupiter's largest moons interact with each other. Her supervisor was Kaare Aksnes.
Working at the Nordic Optical Telescope
From 1992 to 1994, Anlaug worked at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT). This telescope is located at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in the Canary Islands. During this time, she was a support astronomer. This means she helped other astronomers use the telescope.
Discovering an Asteroid
While working at the NOT, Anlaug made an exciting discovery. On February 22, 1994, she found an asteroid. This asteroid is now known as 32892 Prufrock. It orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt.
Her PhD Studies
After her work at the NOT, Anlaug began her PhD studies. From 1994 to 1999, she studied at the Stockholm Observatory in Sweden. Her research focused on deeper questions about space.
Later Career and Research
After finishing her PhD, Anlaug continued her work in astronomy. From 1999 to 2000, she worked at the European Space Agency (ESA). She was part of the Astrophysics Division.
Since May 2000, she has been an astronomer at the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT). She first served as a deputy astronomer-in-charge. Later, in 2002, she became the acting astronomer-in-charge. Her main research areas are how stars form and understanding the sizes of stars.
