Anna mostly created drawings and paintings. She made many portraits, pictures of rooms, flowers, and buildings. Her father, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, was a famous artist, and he influenced her work. She showed her art in exhibitions with him and her step-mother, Laura Theresa Alma-Tadema. Her art was displayed in big national shows, like the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Anna Alma-Tadema was recognized for her art at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. She also won an award at the 1889 Paris Exhibition.
Growing Up as an Artist
Anna Tadema was born in Brussels, Belgium. She was the second daughter of the Dutch painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Her mother was Marie-Pauline Gressin-Dumoulin de Boisgirard. Anna's older sister, Laurense, was born in 1865.
Sadly, their mother died in 1869. After this, Lawrence and his daughters moved to England. In 1871, when Anna was four years old, her father married Laura Epps. Laura also became a painter.
Anna Alma-Tadema grew up in London with her family. Both Anna and her sister Laurense were likely taught at home. Anna appeared in at least two of her father's paintings. In 1873, she and her sister were in a painting called This is Our Corner. Later, in 1883, her father painted her portrait.
Since her mother, father, and step-mother were all painters, Anna grew up in a very artistic home. Her father, Sir Lawrence, was inspired by ancient times. He developed a special painting style that his wife Laura, Anna, and other artists copied.
Anna's sister, Laurense, was also very creative. She was a poet, painter, writer, and critic.
Anna's Artworks
A writer named Helen Zimmern described Anna Alma-Tadema as a "delicate, dainty artist." She said Anna was very good at showing small details, just like her father.
Anna Alma-Tadema created many different types of art. She painted portraits of people and pictures of flowers. She also made watercolor paintings of house interiors and buildings. One of her portraits is called Miss Tessa Gosse. Other works, like The Misty Valley and The Gold Room, were shown at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Anna painted watercolors of the inside of her family's home. This house was called Townshend House. It was in London, near Regent's Park. Her father had decorated the house in a very fancy way, making it look like an old Roman villa. Anna painted The Drawing Room when she was a teenager. This painting was shown in Chicago in 1893. In 1885, she also painted The Gold Room, which showed another part of their family home.
Anna Alma-Tadema showed her art in England for about 40 years. This was between 1885 and 1928. She displayed 15 works at the Royal Academy during this time. These included The Gold Room, Miss Tessa Gosse, The Misty Valley, and The Idler's Harvest.
Even though she lived in London, Anna Alma-Tadema also showed her art in other countries. In 1889, she won a medal at an exhibition in Paris. In 1893, Anna, her father, and her stepmother Laura all showed their art and won awards at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
Anna Alma-Tadema's artworks are still shown today. For example, some of her pieces were part of an exhibition in 2011. This show was called The Cult of Beauty: The Aesthetic Movement 1860–1900. It was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
