Anna Caroline Oury (born De Belleville), also known as Ninette de Belleville, was a talented German pianist and composer. She was born on January 24, 1806, and passed away on July 22, 1880.
Life and career
Anna Caroline de Belleville, often called "Ninette," was born in Landshut, a town in Bavaria, Germany. Her father was a French nobleman who managed the national Court Opera in Mannheim.
When she was a teenager, from 1816 to 1820, Anna studied piano in Vienna. Her teacher was the famous musician Carl Czerny. During this time, she even met the legendary composer Ludwig van Beethoven. She heard him play music on the spot, which is called improvising.
In 1829, Anna traveled to Warsaw. There, another famous composer, Frédéric Chopin, heard her play. He was very impressed! Chopin wrote in a letter that her playing was "excellent." He especially liked how light and elegant it sounded. Years later, in 1841, Chopin dedicated one of his waltzes to her, his Waltz in F minor.
In July 1831, Anna had her first big performance in London. She played at Her Majesty's Theatre with the amazing violinist Niccolò Paganini.
In October 1831, she married Antonio James Oury. He was also a violinist at the King's Theatre in London. Anna and Antonio began touring together as a musical duo.
They performed in many countries between 1831 and 1839. Their tours took them to Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, and Russia. After these tours, they settled in England. They did go on one more concert tour in Italy in 1846-1847.
Anna and her husband worked together to create the Brighton Musical Union in 1847. This was a club for chamber music, similar to the London Musical Union.
For the rest of her career, Anna Caroline Oury focused on writing music. She composed about 180 pieces for the piano during this time. She retired in 1866. Anna Oury passed away in Munich in 1880 when she was 72 years old.
