Anna Cropper (also known as Anna Roache) was an English actress who worked on stage and television. She was born on May 13, 1938, and passed away on January 22, 2007.
Early Life and Beginnings
Anna Cropper was born in Brierfield, Lancashire, England. Her mother, Margaret, was also an actress and director, and her father, Jack Cropper, was a dentist. Anna grew up in Burnley, Lancashire.
Anna studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. This is a famous school where many actors learn their craft.
Her Acting Career
Anna Cropper started her television career in 1960. Her very first role was as a character named Chrysalis in a play called The Insect Play. She also appeared in popular TV shows like Emergency Ward 10 and Coronation Street early in her career.
One of her most notable roles was in the TV play In Two Minds in 1967. In this play, she played a young woman dealing with mental health challenges. Her performance was highly praised, and the play won an award for being the Best Television Play of that year.
Anna also acted in several films. Some of her movie roles included parts in All Neat in Black Stockings (1968), Cromwell (1970), and Nanou (1986).
She played Mary Hodgson in the BBC show The Lost Boys (1978). Mary Hodgson was the nurse for the real-life boys who inspired the famous character Peter Pan. Anna also appeared in two episodes of the BBC's Play for Today, which was a series of stand-alone television plays. These included Robin Redbreast (1970) and Schmoedipus (1974).
Later in her career, Anna Cropper was in The Jewel in the Crown (1984), a popular TV series. She also featured in Anna of the Five Towns (1985), which was a four-part BBC drama set in an earlier time. Her last television role was in an episode of the mystery series Midsomer Murders in 1999.
Family Life
In 1961, Anna Cropper married William Roache, who is also a well-known actor from Coronation Street. They had two children together: a son named Linus Roache, who also became an actor, and a daughter named Vanya. Anna and William divorced in 1974.
Later Years and Death
Anna Cropper passed away suddenly from a heart attack in January 2007. She was 68 years old and was at her home in Tangmere, West Sussex. Her daughter, Vanya, sadly passed away later in 2018 at the age of 50.
