The Anna Livia monument is a beautiful bronze statue found in Croppies Memorial Park in Dublin, Ireland. It used to be in a very busy spot on O'Connell Street. This special artwork celebrates the famous River Liffey.

What is the Anna Livia Monument?

The Anna Livia monument was created by sculptor Éamonn O'Doherty. It was ordered by a businessman named Michael Smurfit in 1988. He wanted to honor his father and celebrate the Dublin Millennium, which was a big event for the city.

What does the statue represent?

The monument is a personification of the River Liffey. This is the main river that flows right through Dublin. A personification means giving human qualities to something that isn't human. So, the statue shows the river as a young woman.

The name Anna Livia Plurabelle comes from a character in a famous book. It's from Finnegans Wake by the Irish writer James Joyce. In the book, this character also represents the River Liffey.

When the statue was first placed, it showed a young woman sitting on a slope. Water flowed all around her. People in Dublin gave it a fun nickname: the Floozie in the Jacuzzi. The sculptor even liked this nickname!

Where is Anna Livia now?

The Anna Livia monument was moved from O'Connell Street in 2001. This was done to make space for another big landmark, the Spire of Dublin.

After some work to fix it up, the statue found a new home. In February 2011, it was moved to Croppies Memorial Park. This park is right next to the Liffey, close to Heuston station. Now, the statue is much closer to the river it represents!
