Anna Howard Meredith MBE (born January 12, 1978) is a super talented Scottish composer and performer. She creates amazing electronic and acoustic music. She's even been a special composer for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra!
In 2016, Anna released her first big album, Varmints. It was a huge hit and won the Scottish Album of the Year Award. Her music often mixes different styles, making it really unique and exciting!

Anna Meredith's Musical Journey
Early Life and Training
Anna Meredith was born in North London, England. When she was two, her family moved to South Queensferry, Scotland. She loved music and studied it at the University of York, where she earned top honors.
Later, she continued her studies at the Royal College of Music. At just 24 years old, she became a special junior fellow there. This showed how talented she was from a young age!
Big Performances and Collaborations
Anna first became widely known in 2008. She created a piece called froms for the BBC Last Night of the Proms. This huge concert was watched by 40 million people!
Since then, she has written another piece for the BBC Proms. She also wrote her first opera, called Tarantula in Petrol Blue. Anna has worked with many different artists, including the famous beatboxer Shlomo. Together, they created a Concerto for Beatboxer and Orchestra.
Anna has also been a judge for the BBC Young Musician of the Year contest. She helped mentor the musician Goldie for a TV show. She often shares her thoughts on music for BBC Radio shows.
Awards and Special Projects
In 2009, Anna was nominated for the Times Breakthrough Award. This award celebrates new and exciting talents. The next year, she won the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers. This award helps support talented artists.
Anna's pieces include Four Tributes to 4am. This work uses an orchestra, electronic sounds, and visuals created by her sister, Eleanor Meredith. Another piece, HandsFree, was written for the National Youth Orchestra. It was performed as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad for the London Olympics. People loved it!
Exploring Electronic Music
Anna started creating more electronic music. She has performed her music all over Europe. She has opened for bands like These New Puritans and played alongside artists like James Blake.
In 2012, Anna released her first EP (a shorter album) called Black Prince Fury. It was released by Moshi Moshi Records. Reviewers compared her unique sound to the avant-garde jazz composer Moondog. In 2013, she released her second EP, Jet Black Raider. Anna shared that this EP used instruments like clarinets, cellos, and drums, unlike her first EP which was fully electronic.
Her first full album, Varmints, came out in March 2016.
Recent Work and Recognition
In 2018, Anna was part of the First Night of The Proms again. She created a new collaboration called Five Telegrams. She also composed the music for the 2018 film Eighth Grade.
For her amazing contributions to music, Anna was given a special honor. She was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2019. This is a big award in the United Kingdom.
Her second studio album, Fibs, was released in October 2019. This album was even nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2020, which is a very important music award. Anna and her band toured to support the album in 2021.
