Anna Howard Meredith MBE (born on January 12, 1978) is a talented Scottish composer and performer. She creates both electronic and acoustic music. She used to be a special composer for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
In 2016, Anna Meredith released her first studio album, Varmints. This album was praised by many critics. It was based on electronica music and won the Scottish Album of the Year Award in 2016.

Anna Meredith's Musical Journey
Anna Meredith was born in Tufnell Park, North London. When she was two years old, her family moved to South Queensferry, Scotland. She studied music at the University of York and later earned her master's degree from the Royal College of Music. In 2003, at age 24, she became a junior fellow at the Royal College of Music.
Early Works and Recognition
Anna Meredith became widely known for her piece froms. She created it for the 2008 BBC Last Night of the Proms, which was watched by 40 million people. Since then, she has written another piece for the BBC Proms. She also created her first opera, Tarantula in Petrol Blue.
Anna has worked with the beatboxer Shlomo. Together, they created the Concerto for Beatboxer and Orchestra. She has also been a judge for the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Anna often appears on BBC Radio 3 and 4 shows as a guest and commentator.
She was nominated for the Times Breakthrough Award in 2009. In 2010, she won the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award for Composers.
Notable Compositions
Some of Anna Meredith's well-known pieces include Four Tributes to 4am. This piece uses an orchestra, electronic sounds, and visuals created by her sister, Eleanor Meredith. Another important work is HandsFree. This was a special commission for the National Youth Orchestra. It was performed as part of the 2012 Cultural Olympiad in the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool and received great reviews.
Exploring Electronic Music
Anna Meredith has also moved into electronic music. She has performed her electronic music across Europe. She has supported artists like These New Puritans and James Blake. In 2012, she released her first EP, Black Prince Fury, on Moshi Moshi Records. Critics compared it to the work of the unique jazz composer Moondog.
In August 2013, she released her second EP, Jet Black Raider. Anna mentioned that this EP featured instruments like clarinets, cellos, and drums. This was different from Black Prince Fury, which used only synthesised sounds.
Her first full album, Varmints, was released in March 2016.
Recent Projects and Awards
Anna Meredith was part of the First Night of the 2018 Proms. She presented a new collaboration called Five Telegrams with 59 Productions. She also created the music for the 2018 film Eighth Grade. In 2019, she was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her contributions to music.
Her second studio album, Fibs, came out on October 25, 2019. This album was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2020. She toured with her band in 2021 to support the album.
