Anna Schaffelhuber on the podium in Austria

Anna Katharina Schaffelhuber (born January 26, 1993) is an amazing German para-alpine skier. She is known for winning many medals in skiing competitions. At the 2014 Winter Paralympics, she won five gold medals. This made her only the second athlete ever to win every alpine skiing event at the Paralympics!

Early Life and Start in Skiing

Anna Schaffelhuber was born in Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany. She was born with a spinal cord condition, which means she uses a wheelchair. When she was just five years old, Anna started monoskiing. This is a special way of skiing where you sit on a single ski. By the time she was fourteen, she was good enough to get a scholarship. This scholarship helped her join a national junior skiing program.

Anna's Skiing Career

Anna Schaffelhuber competes in the LW10 para-alpine skiing group. This means she uses a sitting mono-ski and special poles called outriggers. Outriggers are like small crutches with skis on the end that help her balance.

First Paralympic Games: Vancouver 2010

Anna was chosen to be part of the German team for the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. She competed in four different events. She won her first Paralympic medal, a bronze, in the super-G race. She also finished fourth in two other events and seventh in another. At the end of the Games, Anna had the special honor of carrying the German flag during the closing ceremony.

World Championships Success

In 2011, Anna competed at the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Italy. She won three gold medals there! These were for the super-combined, slalom, and giant slalom events. She also earned a silver medal in the team event.

Two years later, at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Spain, Anna won another gold medal in the slalom. She also added four more medals to her collection: two silver medals and two bronze medals.

Sochi 2014: A Golden Performance

Anna competed in her second Paralympics at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. This was a truly amazing competition for her!

  • She won her first Paralympic gold medal in the downhill race.
  • Then, she won a second gold medal in the super-G.
  • In the slalom event, there was a bit of a mix-up. She was first disqualified, but after an appeal, she was given her third gold medal!
  • Anna then won a fourth gold medal in the combined event.
  • Finally, she won her fifth gold medal in the giant slalom.

Winning all five sitting events meant she made a "clean sweep" of the alpine skiing medals. This was a huge achievement! Because of her incredible performance, Anna was given the "Best Female" award at the Paralympic Sports Awards.

Awards and Recognition

Anna Schaffelhuber has received many awards for her achievements. In November 2010, she was voted the International Paralympic Committee's athlete of the month. In 2011, she was named Germany's Disabled Athlete of the Year. She also received the German National Paralympic Committee's Female Disabled Athlete of the Year award in 2013.
