Anna Katharina Schaffelhuber (born January 26, 1993) is an amazing German para-alpine skier. She is known for her incredible success at the 2014 Winter Paralympics. There, she won five gold medals, becoming only the second athlete ever to win every alpine skiing event in her category.

Early Life and Starting Skiing

Anna Schaffelhuber was born in Regensburg, Germany. She was born with a condition that affected her spinal cord. Because of this, she uses a wheelchair.

Anna started monoskiing when she was just five years old. By the time she was fourteen, she was so good that she received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to join a national junior skiing program.

Anna's Skiing Career

Anna Schaffelhuber competes in a special category for para-alpine skiing called LW10. This means she skis while sitting down, using a mono-ski and special poles called outriggers for balance.

First Paralympic Games: Vancouver 2010

Anna was chosen to be part of the German team for the 2010 Winter Paralympics. These Games were held in Vancouver, Canada. She competed in four different skiing events.

She won her first Paralympic medal, a bronze, in the super-G event. She also finished fourth in two other events and seventh in another. At the closing ceremony of the Games, Anna had the special honor of carrying the German flag.

World Championships Success

Anna continued her success at the 2011 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Sestriere, Italy. She won three gold medals in the super-combined, slalom, and giant slalom events. She also earned a silver medal in the team event.

At the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in La Molina, Spain, Anna showed her skill again. She won another gold medal in the slalom. She also added four more medals to her collection: two silver medals and two bronze medals.

Dominating the Sochi 2014 Paralympics

Anna competed in her second Paralympics at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. This was where she truly shined!

  • She won her first Paralympic gold medal in the downhill event.
  • Then, she won a second gold medal in the super-G.
  • In the slalom event, there was a mix-up where she was first disqualified, but after an appeal, she was given her third gold medal.
  • Anna then won a fourth gold medal in the combined event.
  • Finally, she won her fifth gold medal in the giant slalom.

Winning all five sitting events meant she achieved a "clean sweep." This was an amazing feat, making her only the second athlete to do so in alpine skiing at the Paralympics. Because of her incredible performance, Anna was named "Best Female" at the Paralympic Sports Awards.

Pyeongchang 2018 Paralympics

Anna continued her winning streak at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. She won two more gold medals, one in the downhill and another in the super-G. She also earned a silver medal in the super combined event.

Anna Schaffelhuber has received many awards for her achievements.
