Anna Borysivna Sharyhina (born around 1978) is an activist from Ukraine. She works to support equal rights for women and for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). Anna helped start two important groups: the Sphere Women's Association in Kharkiv and the NGO Kyiv Pride. Kyiv Pride is the group that organizes the Pride Parade in Kyiv.

About Anna Sharyhina

Anna Sharyhina grew up in a family that spoke Russian.

She and her partner, Vira Chemygina, have been working for equal rights for over ten years. They have helped organize "walks for equality" in Kyiv. These walks are like parades where people gather to support fairness and equal rights for everyone.

Early Equality Walks

Kyiv's second walk for equality happened in 2015. Police were there to help keep everyone safe. Many public figures also supported the event. However, the march had to stop after only 15 minutes. Some groups caused trouble, and ten people, including police officers, were hurt.

Facing Challenges

Anna Sharyhina's work for women's rights and equal rights has faced challenges in Ukraine. For example, when she was going to give a talk about movements for equal rights in Kharkiv, the meeting had to be moved two times to different places to keep everyone safe.

In July 2018, a community center called PrideHub in Kharkiv was attacked. People wearing masks used smoke grenades. Later, the building was damaged with graffiti and animal blood. Even though people reported these events to the police, and many letters were sent to the Interior Minister, no one was punished for these actions.

Women's Solidarity Week

In March 2019, Anna Sharyhina helped organize a "Week of Women's Solidarity" in Kharkiv. This event aimed to remind people about the true meaning of International Women's Day. She explained that the day is about women coming together to fight for their rights. It's a day for women to support each other, not just to receive gifts. The Week of Women's Solidarity is mainly about learning and growing. It brings people together to help women, women's groups, and all of Ukrainian society develop.

Speaking Out

In January 2020, Anna Sharyhina spoke out when the United States Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, visited Ukraine. She felt it was important that he did not meet with leaders from the LGBT community during his visit.

Some Ukrainian groups have criticized Anna Sharyhina. They have done this because she has worked with organizations from Russia, like the Russian LGBT Network.
