Working for Equality
Anna Sharyhina and her partner, Vira Chemygina, have been active in the Ukrainian LGBT community for over ten years. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. They work to make sure everyone has the same rights, no matter their gender or who they love.
Organizing Equality Walks
They organized Kyiv's first "walks for equality." These walks are like parades where people show support for equal rights. The second walk in Kyiv, held in 2015, had police protection and support from many public figures. However, some people tried to stop the march, and it only lasted about 15 minutes.
Facing Challenges
Anna Sharyhina's work for equal rights has faced challenges in Ukraine. For example, when she tried to give a talk about LGBT movements in a Kharkiv bookstore, the meeting had to be moved twice.
A community center in Kharkiv called PrideHub was also attacked in 2018. The building was later damaged with graffiti. Even though complaints were made to the police, no one was punished for these actions.
Women's Solidarity
In March 2019, Anna Sharyhina helped organize a "Week of Women's Solidarity" in Kharkiv. This event aimed to remind people of the true meaning of International Women's Day.
A Week for Rights
Anna explained that the event's goal was for women to unite and fight for their rights. She said it is a day for women to stand together, not just for gifts. The Week of Women's Solidarity is mostly about education. It brings people together to help women and all of Ukrainian society grow stronger.
International Connections
In January 2020, Anna Sharyhina spoke out when the United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Ukraine. She believed he should have met with leaders from the LGBTQ community during his visit.
Anna Sharyhina has faced criticism from some Ukrainian nationalists. They have criticized her for working with Russian organizations like the Russian LGBT Network.
