Anna Wierzbicka is a famous Polish linguist. She was born in Warsaw, Poland, on March 10, 1938. She is now a professor at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.
Professor Wierzbicka grew up in Poland and studied at Warsaw University. In 1972, she moved to Australia, where she has lived ever since. She has written more than twenty books. Many of her books have been translated into other languages.
She is well-known for her work on how language creates meaning. This field is called semantics. She also studies how we use language in real-life situations, which is called pragmatics. Another area she explores is how languages differ across cultures. This is known as cross-cultural linguistics.
One of her most important ideas is the natural semantic metalanguage. This is a special way to describe meanings using very simple, basic words that are found in all languages.
About Anna Wierzbicka
Anna Wierzbicka was born in 1938, just before World War II began. She earned her PhD in 1964. Five years later, she received another important degree called a habilitation.
Since 1973, she has worked at the ANU. She became a full professor there in 1989. She was also chosen as a fellow of important academic groups. These include the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1988 and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia in 1996.
Throughout her career, she has worked closely with other Polish researchers. She received the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science in 2010. This award was for her work on the natural semantic metalanguage. She discovered a set of basic meanings that are common to all languages. Her studies connect many different subjects. These include anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, as well as linguistics.
What is Natural Semantic Metalanguage?
In her 1972 book, Semantic Primitives, Anna Wierzbicka introduced her theory. It is called the natural semantic metalanguage. This theory helps us understand language and meaning in a way that works for all languages.
Over the next 35 years, Professor Wierzbicka made her idea even better. She found about 200 basic meanings. These meanings are checked using a series of five statements. She believes these basic meanings are the core of all human language.
