Anna Wierzbicka (born March 10, 1938, in Warsaw, Poland) is a famous Polish linguist. A linguist is someone who studies language. She is now a professor at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.

Anna grew up in Poland and studied at Warsaw University. In 1972, she moved to Australia, where she has lived ever since. She has written more than twenty books. Many of her books have been translated into other languages.

Wierzbicka is known for her work on how we understand meaning in language, called semantics. She also studies how language is used in different cultures. This is known as cross-cultural linguistics. Her most famous idea is the natural semantic metalanguage. This is a way to find basic meanings that are the same in all languages.

Her Life and Work

Anna Wierzbicka was born in 1938, just before World War II started. She earned her PhD in 1964. Five years later, she received another important degree called a habilitation. This degree shows she is qualified to teach at a university.

Since 1973, she has worked at the ANU. In 1989, she became a full professor there. She was chosen as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1988. In 1996, she became a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Being a Fellow means she is recognized as a top expert in her field.

Throughout her career, Anna has worked closely with other researchers from Poland. She won the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science in 2010. This award was for her work on the natural semantic metalanguage. She discovered a set of simple meanings that are common to all languages. Her studies combine ideas from many areas. These include anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, as well as linguistics.

What is Natural Semantic Metalanguage?

In 1972, Anna Wierzbicka wrote a book called Semantic Primitives. In this book, she introduced her idea of a natural semantic metalanguage. This is a theory about language and meaning that works for all languages. It is not tied to any one language.

Over the next 35 years, Wierzbicka made her idea even better. She found about 200 basic meanings. These meanings are checked using a series of five statements. She believes these basic meanings are at the very core of all human language. They are like the building blocks of how we think and talk.
