Annandale and Eskdale is a special area in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It includes two main valleys: Annandale and Eskdale. These valleys are named after the rivers that flow through them, the River Annan and the River Esk. From 1975 to 1996, Annandale and Eskdale was a local government district. This meant it had its own council that helped run local services.

A Look Back: Annandale and Eskdale's Past
Before 1975, Annandale and Eskdale were old areas in Scotland. They were like small regions with their own leaders. Over time, larger areas called "shires" became more important. Annandale and Eskdale became part of Dumfriesshire.
How the District Was Formed
A new local government district called Annandale and Eskdale was created on May 16, 1975. This happened because of a law called the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973. This law changed how local areas were run in Scotland. It set up two main levels of government: larger "regions" and smaller "districts."
Annandale and Eskdale became one of four districts within the Dumfries and Galloway region. This new district brought together many smaller towns and areas that used to have their own councils. These included:
Changes in Local Government
In 1996, there was another big change in local government. The four districts in Dumfries and Galloway, including Annandale and Eskdale, were ended. A single council, the Dumfries and Galloway Council, took over all their jobs.
Even though it's not a separate district anymore, Annandale and Eskdale is still important. The Dumfries and Galloway Council uses the old district boundaries to help organize its work. They have an "area committee" for Annandale and Eskdale. This committee helps make sure local needs are met in the area.
Who Was in Charge: Political Control
The first election for the Annandale and Eskdale district council happened in 1974. This council officially started its work in May 1975. Here's how different groups were in charge over the years:
Party in control | Years | |
---|---|---|
Independent | 1975–1988 | |
No overall control | 1988–1992 | |
Liberal Democrats | 1992–1996 |
- Independent politician: These were people who didn't belong to a specific political party.
- No overall control: This means no single party or group had more than half the seats on the council. They often had to work together.
- Liberal Democrats (UK): This is a political party in the United Kingdom.
Where the Council Met: The Main Office
The Annandale and Eskdale council had its main office in Annan. Their offices were part of the historic Annan Town Hall. The original town hall was built a long time ago, between 1875 and 1878.
The council added a large new part to the town hall. This new section had its own entrance. Since the district council was ended in 1996, the building is now used by the Dumfries and Galloway Council as a local office.
