Anne-Cath. Vestly (born February 15, 1920 – died December 15, 2008) was a famous Norwegian writer. She wrote many popular children's books from 1953 to 2004. She was best known for her book series about a grandmother, called Mormor, who had many adventures with eight children.

Anne-Cath. Vestly wrote over 50 books for children. Her stories are loved by many in Norway and other countries. She also worked on radio and television shows for kids.

Early Life and Education

Anne Catharina Schulerud was born in a village called Rena in Norway. Her father was a pharmacist and owned a hardware store. Her mother was a school teacher.

She finished high school in Lillehammer in 1939. After that, she moved to Oslo with her mother. There, she studied at the University of Oslo. She also went to trade school and acted in amateur plays.

Starting Her Career

In 1946, Anne-Cath. Vestly started working in radio. Her brother, Mentz Schulerud, helped her get involved. He worked at Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

Soon, she began creating children's shows for radio and TV. Many of her books were first read aloud on a popular NRK radio show called Barnetimen for de minste. She also acted in a children's TV show called Kanutten og Romeo Klive in 1963. She starred alongside another famous Norwegian writer, Alf Prøysen.

Her Famous Books

Her first book was Ole Aleksander Filibom-bom-bom. This book later became part of a series with twelve books.

Anne-Cath. Vestly also wrote the "Aurora" series (1966–1972). In these books, she showed families in a new way. For example, the mother was a lawyer, and the father stayed home with their two children. This was different from how families were usually shown back then.

Her most famous work is the "Eight Children" series. The first book was called Eight Children and a Truck (Åtte små, to store og en lastebil in Norwegian). It's about a family with eight children living in a small apartment in Oslo. This series grew to nine books. The last book was published in 2000. It was about the children's grandmother, Mormor.

Anne-Cath. Vestly as an Actress

Anne-Cath. Vestly also acted in movies and TV shows based on her books. She played the role of Grandma (Mormor) herself. She was in the movies Mormor og de åtte ungene i byen (1977) and Mormor og de åtte ungene i skogen (1979).

Personal Life

In 1946, Anne-Cath. Vestly married Johan Vestly (1923-1993). They had two sons named Jo and Håkon. Her husband drew all the pictures for her books until he passed away in 1993.

Anne-Cath. Vestly was the sister of Mentz Schulerud, who was also a writer and radio personality. She was also the aunt of Ingrid Schulerud. Ingrid is married to Jens Stoltenberg, who was once the Prime Minister of Norway and later became the head of NATO.

Later in her life, Anne-Cath. Vestly was diagnosed with a memory illness. She spent her final years living in a nursing home in Mjøndalen. She passed away in 2008 when she was 88 years old.
