Anne-Marie Krumpholtz (born Anne-Marie Steckler) was a talented French musician. She was a famous harpist and also a composer.

Life of a Harpist

Anne-Marie Steckler was born in Metz, France. Her father, Christian Steckler, was a person who made musical instruments. A well-known harpist and composer, Johann Baptist Krumpholtz, often visited her father's workshop.

Early Musical Training

Anne-Marie learned to play the harp from Krumpholtz. She was very good at it. In 1779, she performed for the first time in public. This was at the Concerts Spirituel in Paris, where she played alongside Krumpholtz.

Moving to London

Later, Anne-Marie married Johann Baptist Krumpholtz. They had three children together. Around 1788, Anne-Marie moved to London, England. She continued her successful career as a musician there.

A Leading Performer

Anne-Marie Krumpholtz became a very important solo harpist. She helped create a path for women to become professional harp performers on stage. The famous composer Joseph Haydn even wrote a special song part for her. It was for the harp in his opera L’anima del filosofo: Orpheus & Eurydice.

Musical Family

Anne-Marie's daughter, Fanny Krumpholtz Pittar, also became a harpist and a composer. Music was clearly a big part of their family life.
