Anne-Sophie Kaloghiros is a brilliant mathematics researcher. She studies special shapes and spaces using algebra, a field called algebraic geometry. She is a professor at Brunel University London. In 2020, she received a special award called the Emmy Noether Fellowship from the London Mathematical Society. This award helps women in mathematics with their research.

Anne-Sophie Kaloghiros's Journey in Math

Early Education and Degrees

Anne-Sophie Kaloghiros loved math from a young age. She studied pure mathematics at the Université d’Orsay, Paris XI, finishing in 2001. She also earned a degree from the Ecole Centrale Paris in 2003. In the same year, she received a special certificate with distinction from Queens’ College at the University of Cambridge.

Earning Her PhD

In 2007, Anne-Sophie earned her PhD in Algebraic Geometry from the University of Cambridge. Her research was about understanding the shapes of certain complex 3D objects. Her main teacher for this work was Alessio Corti.

Research and Teaching

After her PhD, Anne-Sophie continued her research. She was a junior research fellow at Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, from 2007 to 2011. She also worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Cambridge in 2011. From 2012 to 2014, she was a research associate at Imperial College London.

She has also visited and worked at many famous math institutes around the world. These include the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in California and the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) in Japan. She also visited the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics in Germany.

Currently, she is a senior lecturer in Mathematics at Brunel University London. She is an expert in algebraic geometry and birational geometry. This means she studies how different mathematical shapes can be transformed into each other. She also helps guide young mathematicians as part of the London Mathematical Society Mentoring African Research in Mathematics (MARM) board.

Awards and Honors

Anne-Sophie Kaloghiros has received several important awards. In 2017–2018, she received the Brunel Athena Swan Award. In 2020, she was given the prestigious Emmy Noether Fellowship by the London Mathematical Society. This award helps women in mathematics with their research.

Her research has also received funding from several important groups. These include the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRCP). She has also received support from the London Mathematical Society, the Edinburgh Mathematical Society, and the Glasgow Mathematical Journal Trust.
