Becoming an Astronomer
Anne Archibald studied mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada. During her studies, she worked on projects that used computer graphics. She also learned how to analyze images from radar.
After her first degree, she went to McGill University. There, she earned a master's degree in pure mathematics. Later, she continued her studies at McGill. She became a student of a well-known astrophysicist named Victoria Kaspi.
Awards for Her Work
In 2013, Anne Archibald finished her important research. She wrote a long paper called a doctoral dissertation. It was titled The End of Accretion: The X-ray Binary/Millisecond Pulsar Transition Object PSR J1023+0038.
Her work was so good that she won two big awards:
- The Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin Doctoral Dissertation Award in Astrophysics from the American Physical Society.
- The J.S. Plaskett Medal from the Canadian Astronomical Society.
These awards showed how important her discoveries were in the world of astronomy.
Working in Science
After finishing her studies, Anne Archibald continued her research. She worked in the Netherlands at places like ASTRON and the Anton Pannekoek Institute for Astronomy. She received a special grant called a Veni fellowship to support her work.
From 2019 to 2023, she was a senior lecturer at Newcastle University. This means she taught and did research there.
