Anne Elizabeth Trefethen is a leading expert in computers and science. She is a Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford, which means she helps run the university. Her role focuses on "People & Digital," dealing with staff and technology. She is also a professor of Scientific Computing. This field uses powerful computers to solve big science problems.
Anne Trefethen is a fellow of St Cross College at Oxford. Her work in different companies and universities has always been about using computers. She focuses on special computer methods called numerical algorithms and software. She also works on computational science, which is using computers to study science. Another key area for her is high-performance computing, which means using very fast and powerful computers.
Since June 2018, Trefethen has also been a non-executive director on the board of the UK Statistics Authority. This group helps make sure official statistics in the UK are correct and reliable.

Her Work and Career
Anne Trefethen has had many important roles in her career. She started as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services and University Collections) at the University of Oxford in January 2015. In this job, she looked after the university's libraries, museums, and language teaching services.
Leading Computer Science at Oxford
Before that, she became the University of Oxford's first chief information officer in March 2012. She held this role until October 2017. As chief information officer, she was in charge of all the university's computer systems and technology.
From 2006 to 2012, she was the Director of the Oxford e-Research Centre. This center does research using computers to solve scientific problems. She was also a Co-Director of the Institute for the Future of Computing. This institute was part of the James Martin 21st Century School.
Before Oxford
Before coming to Oxford in 2005, Anne Trefethen worked on a big project in the UK called the UK e-Science Core Programme. She was first the Deputy Director and then the Director of this program. This program looked at wide issues in e-Science, which is about doing science using advanced computing. It also focused on Grid computing, which connects many computers to work together. They developed special software called middleware to help these computers communicate.
From 1997 to 2001, she was the Vice-President for Research and Development at Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) Ltd. This company creates software for math and science.
Earlier in her career, from 1988 to 1997, Trefethen worked in the United States. She was at Thinking Machines Corporation, a company known for its supercomputers. She also worked at the Cornell Theory Center, where she was the Associate Director for Scientific Computational Support. This role involved helping scientists use powerful computers for their research.
Awards and Recognition
In 2017, Anne Trefethen was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This is a very high honor for engineers in the UK. It shows that she is recognized as a leader in her field.
