Anne Elizabeth Trefethen is a very important person at the University of Oxford. She is a professor who teaches about how computers can solve big science problems. She also helps lead the university as a Pro Vice-Chancellor. This means she helps manage many parts of the university, especially things related to people and digital technology.

Professor Trefethen is also a Fellow of St Cross College at Oxford. Her work, both in companies and at universities, focuses on special computer programs called numerical algorithms. These programs help solve math problems using computers. She also works with computational science and high-performance computing, which means using very powerful computers to do complex calculations.

In 2018, Anne Trefethen joined the board of the UK Statistics Authority. This group helps make sure that official statistics in the UK are correct and used well.

Anne Trefethen's Career Journey

Anne Trefethen has had a long and exciting career working with computers and science.

Early Roles at Oxford

In January 2015, Professor Trefethen became a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oxford. In this role, she was in charge of important services like the university's libraries, museums, and language teaching. Before that, in March 2012, she became the university's first Chief Information Officer (CIO). This meant she was the main person in charge of all the university's computer systems and technology. She held this role until October 2017.

Leading Computer Research

From 2006 to 2012, Anne Trefethen was the Director of the Oxford e-Research Centre. This center helps scientists use computers to do their research. She was also a Co-Director at the Institute for the Future of Computing. This institute looks at how computers will change our world in the future.

Work Before Oxford

Before coming to Oxford in 2005, Professor Trefethen worked on a big project called the UK e-Science Core Programme. This program helped develop special computer tools and systems to make science research easier and faster. From 1997 to 2001, she was a Vice-President at a company called Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) Ltd. This company creates software for solving math problems.

Even earlier, from 1988 to 1997, she worked in the United States. She was at a company called Thinking Machines Corporation. She also worked at the Cornell Theory Center, where she helped scientists use powerful computers for their research.

Special Recognition

In 2017, Anne Trefethen was given a very special honor. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This means she is recognized as one of the top engineers in the UK.
