Lady Anne Twysden (born Anne Finch; 28 February 1574 – 14 October 1638) was an English writer from a long time ago. She was known for her children who became important people, and for a special book she wrote. Sadly, the original copy of her book is now lost.

Anne Twysden's Early Life

Anne Twysden was born in London in 1574. Her parents were Sir Moyle Finch, 1st Baronet, and Elizabeth Heneage. Her mother, Elizabeth, later became the first Countess of Winchilsea.

Anne grew up with several brothers and a sister. As a child, she lived at the court of Queen Elizabeth. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Heneage, took care of her there. Anne was very smart and learned four different languages.

Her Life and Writings

Lady Anne Twysden had her own helpers, called ladies-in-waiting. Two of them were Isabella Saunders and Jane Thomlinson. Anne helped them marry her sons. Isabella married her son Roger in 1635. Jane married her son Thomas in 1639.

Anne lived in two houses, one in East Peckham and another in London. We know many details about her life from the diary kept by her daughter-in-law, Isabella.

Lady Anne wrote a book of devotions, which are like prayers and religious thoughts. Her son Roger later edited and published this book. His notes show that the book was published after her death in 1638. Some of Anne Twysden's letters are kept safe at the British Library. Her original book of devotions was known to exist until 1849, but it has since been lost.

Her Family Life

Anne married William Twysden. He was given the special title of a baronet. Before he passed away in 1629, they had five sons and two daughters.

Their children included:

  • Sir Roger Twysden, 2nd Baronet (1597–1672), who married Isabella Saunders.
  • Elizabeth Twysden (1600–1655), who married Sir Hugh Cholmeley, 1st Baronet, in 1622.
  • Sir Thomas Twisden, 1st Baronet (1602–1683), who married Jane Thomlinson.
  • Anne Twysden (around 1603–1670), who married Sir Christopher Yelverton, 1st Baronet.

Lady Anne Twysden died in Kent in 1638.
