Sir Moyle Finch (born around 1550 – died 18 December 1614) was an important English politician. He was a knight, a sheriff, and a Member of Parliament (MP). He was also the first Baronet of Eastwell in Kent. His wife, Elizabeth Heneage, later became the Countess of Winchilsea.

Early Life and Family

Moyle Finch was born around 1550. He was the second son of Sir Thomas Finch and Catherine Moyle. Even though he was the second son, he became the oldest surviving child.

His Family Connections

Moyle had a brother named Henry Finch, who also became a Member of Parliament. His sister, Jane Finch, married George Wyatt.

His grandparents on his father's side were Sir William Finch and Elizabeth Cromer. Sir William was knighted for his bravery in battle. On his mother's side, his grandparents were Sir Thomas Moyle and Katherine Jordeyne. Katherine's father was a well-known goldsmith.

In 1568, Moyle Finch began his studies at Gray's Inn, which was a place where people learned about law.

Sir Moyle Finch's Career

Sir Moyle Finch had a busy career in politics and public service.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

He first became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis in 1576. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the country's government. He served in this role until 1584. Later, he represented Kent in 1593 and Winchelsea in 1601.

Serving as High Sheriff

Besides being an MP, Sir Moyle also served as the High Sheriff of Kent. He held this important position twice, in 1596 and again in 1605. A High Sheriff was a royal officer responsible for keeping peace and order in a county.

Honors and Titles

In 1585, Moyle Finch was knighted, which means he was given the title "Sir" by the Queen. In 1611, he was given another special title: he was made a Baronet. A Baronet is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down through the family.

Personal Life and Family

In 1573, Sir Moyle Finch married Elizabeth Heneage. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Heneage.

Their Children

Sir Moyle and Elizabeth had several children:

  • Sir Theophilus Finch (1573–1619)
  • Lady Anne Finch (1574–1638), who became a writer.
  • Thomas Finch (1578–1639), who later became the 2nd Earl of Winchilsea.
  • Sir Heneage Finch (1580–1631), who became the Speaker of the House of Commons.
  • Hon. Francis Finch (born around 1585), who was a lawyer and also an MP.
  • Lady Catherine Finch.

Family Legacy

Sir Moyle Finch passed away in December 1614. His oldest son, Theophilus, inherited his title as the 2nd Baronet.

After Sir Moyle's death, his wife Elizabeth was given special honors. In 1623, she became Viscountess Winchilsea. Then, in 1628, she was made the Countess of Winchilsea. This was a very high honor for a woman at that time. When she died in 1634, her son Thomas became the 2nd Earl of Winchilsea.

Their son, Sir Heneage Finch, who was Speaker of the House of Commons, had a son also named Heneage Finch. This younger Heneage Finch later became the 1st Earl of Nottingham, continuing the family's important role in English history.
