Anne Shirley Wills, also known as "Willsy", is a famous Australian television and radio star from Adelaide. She is best known for holding a special record: she has won more Logie Awards than any other person in the history of Australian television! In total, she has won 20 Logies for her work both on-screen and as a producer.
Early Life
Anne Wills was born in Wangaratta, Victoria, on October 3, 1944. When she was just three years old, her family moved to a small island in the Pacific Ocean called Ocean Island. Today, this island is known as Banaba Island and is part of the country of Kiribati. Anne lived there with her family until 1963, when they moved to Adelaide, South Australia.
A Star on Screen
Anne's television career began by chance. In 1964, some executives from the TV station Channel 9 saw her during a telethon event. They were so impressed that they offered her a job as the weather presenter. She started her new role in July 1965 and quickly became a popular face on TV.
Over the years, Anne has appeared on many popular TV shows across Australia. These include In Melbourne Tonight, Beauty and the Beast, and Good Morning Australia. She also hosted and appeared on many local Adelaide shows like Adelaide Tonight and AM Adelaide.
Besides being a TV host, she was also a weather presenter for the SAS station for many years. Anne is famous for her fun personality and her love of wearing large, stylish earrings. She continues to be active on the radio, sharing celebrity news on the Adelaide station FiveAA.
Trying Out Music
In 1972, Anne also recorded a music album called Colour My World. It was released on a local Adelaide record label.
A Record-Breaking Winner
The Logie Awards are Australia's biggest awards for television. Anne Wills has won an incredible 19 Logies for being South Australia's Most Popular Female Personality. She also won a Logie as a producer, bringing her total to 20. This is a record that no one else has beaten.
In 2018, she received another special honour, the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for her long and successful career in broadcasting.
