Early Life and Learning
Anne Zahalka's mother was from Austria and her father was from the Czech Republic. They met and got married in England during World War II. Because of her family's background, Anne became very interested in people who moved to Australia from other countries. She also explored Australia's many different cultures.
She studied art at the Sydney College of the Arts in 1979. She completed both her first degree and her advanced studies there.
What Anne Zahalka's Art Is About
Anne Zahalka's art often explores Australian culture. She looks at things like how boys and girls are expected to act, what people do for fun, and how art is usually made. In interviews, she has talked about how her family and growing up influenced her work. She noticed that there weren't many stories or pictures from migrants about their lives in Australia.
One of her most well-known pictures is called The Sunbather #2. She also created a big art project called Welcome to Sydney in 2003 for Sydney Airport.
In 1986 and 1987, Anne lived and worked in Berlin, Germany. This gave her a chance to connect with her European family roots. She made detailed indoor scenes that looked like paintings from old Dutch and Flemish artists, such as Vermeer. This led to two groups of works called Resemblance (1987) and Resemblance II (1989).
