Anne of Green Gables (赤毛のアン, Akage no An, Red-haired Anne) is a popular anime (animated TV series). It is part of Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater collection. This series is based on the famous 1908 book, Anne of Green Gables, written by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The anime was made in 1979 by Nippon Animation. It first aired on Fuji TV in Japan from January 7 to December 30, 1979. There are 50 episodes in total. The first six episodes were later combined into a movie that came out in 2010.

Anne of Green Gables has been shown in many countries. It was popular in other Asian countries, Europe, and French Canada. You might know it as Anna dai capelli rossi in Italian or Anne la maison aux pignons verts in French. An English version was also made and shown in South Africa and on Japan Entertainment Television. Since 2016, you can even watch it legally on YouTube.

Just like the original books, the Anne anime is still very loved in Japan today. A special DVD set was released in 2008, and a Blu-Ray version came out in 2014. There's even a prequel anime series called Kon'nichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables, which started in 2009.

The Story of Anne

The story follows a young girl named Anne Shirley. She grew up in an orphanage. By mistake, Anne is sent to live with Miss Marilla Cuthbert and Mr. Matthew Cuthbert. They had actually asked for a boy to help them on their farm.

Marilla is surprised when Anne arrives. But after she learns about Anne's sad past, Anne slowly becomes a very important part of the Cuthbert family.

Making the Anime Series

The Anne of Green Gables anime was directed by Isao Takahata. He wanted this version to be very true to the original book. This was a bit different from his earlier works, like Heidi, Girl of the Alps, which had been changed a bit.

Hayao Miyazaki helped with the scene settings and layouts for the anime. He had worked with Takahata before. Miyazaki noticed that Takahata liked to show realistic actions in his animation.

Yoshifumi Kondō was chosen to design the characters and be the animation director. He later worked with Takahata on famous films like Grave of the Fireflies. The voice of Anne was done by Eiko Yamada. She became a well-known voice actress for many World Masterpiece Theatre anime shows.

The first six episodes were put together into a 100-minute movie in 1989. This film was finally shown to the public on July 17, 2010, at the Ghibli Museum. It was called Anne of Green Gables: Road to Green Gables (赤毛のアン グリーンゲーブルズへの道, Akage no An: Green Gables e no Michi, Red-haired Anne: Road to Green Gables). Both the movie and the full TV series are available on Blu-ray.
