About Annette Meakin
Early Life and Education
Annette M. B. Meakin was born on August 12, 1867. Her parents were Edward Ebenezer and Sarah Meakin. Her father worked as a tea planter in India.
Annette went to school in England and Germany. She studied music at the Royal College of Music in London. She also studied at the Stern Conservatoire in Berlin. Later, she learned about ancient cultures at University College London.
Amazing Journeys
Annette's biggest adventure was her trip to Japan. She and her mother, Sarah Meakin, were pioneers. They were the first English women to travel to Japan by the Trans-Siberian railway.
They started their journey from London in January 1900. After a stop in Paris, they arrived in Russia in May 1900. Annette wrote that they traveled with only three pieces of luggage. This was very light for such a long trip!
Annette wrote a book about their adventure. It was called "A Ribbon of Iron." The book described their stops in cities like Omsk, Tomsk, and Krasnoyarsk. They even took a trip on the Yenisei River, which flows to the Arctic Ocean. Her book was very popular. It was even quoted a lot in another book about the Trans-Siberian Railway.
A Writer's Life
Annette's main job was writing. During World War I, she also worked as a chemist's assistant.
In 1921, Annette had a legal disagreement with another author. She showed that the other author's book was too similar to her own book. Her book was called Galicia, the Switzerland of Spain. Because of this, the other book was removed from libraries.
Annette Meakin passed away in 1959. She gave her important papers to the Bodleian Library. This library keeps many valuable historical documents.
