Annie Courtney is an Irish former politician. She was a member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). She also served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for the area of Foyle from 2000 to 2003.

Becoming a Local Leader
In 1985, Annie Courtney joined the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). This is a political party in Northern Ireland. She was elected to the Derry City Council. This council helps run the local city.
In 1993, she became the Mayor of Derry. The mayor is like the main leader of the city council. She retired from nursing in 1997.
Serving in the Assembly
In December 2000, a well-known politician named John Hume left the Northern Ireland Assembly. This Assembly is like a parliament for Northern Ireland. Annie Courtney was chosen to take his place. She represented the Foyle area.
In 2003, Annie Courtney wanted to run again in the 2003 Northern Ireland Assembly election. However, her party, the SDLP, did not choose her to be their candidate. Because of this, she left the party in April 2003. After leaving the party, she decided to run as an independent candidate. This means she ran without belonging to any political party. In the election, she received 802 votes but was not elected.
