Annika Virpi Irene Saarikko (born November 10, 1983) is a Finnish politician. She served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland from 2020 to 2023. She was also the leader of the Centre Party from 2020 to 2024.

Early Life and Education

Annika Saarikko was born in Oripää, Finland. She studied at the University of Turku. She earned degrees in educational science and philosophy, focusing on media studies.

Political Career Highlights

Starting in Politics

In 2010, Saarikko was chosen as a vice chair of the Centre Party. She was then elected to the Finnish Parliament in the 2011 Finnish parliamentary election. This was her first step into national politics.

Serving as a Minister

From 2017 to 2019, Saarikko worked as the Minister of Family Affairs and Social Services. In 2019, she became the Minister of Science and Culture. She took a break for maternity leave in August 2019. Hanna Kosonen filled her role during this time. Saarikko returned to her post in August 2020.

Key Leadership Roles

In September 2020, Annika Saarikko became the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland. This role is usually held by the leader of the second-largest party in the government. In May 2021, she also took on the important job of Minister of Finance.

Leading the Centre Party

Saarikko led the Centre Party in the 2023 Finnish parliamentary election. After the election, the party lost some seats. Because of this, Saarikko announced that the party would not join the new government. In February 2024, she shared that she would not seek to be the party leader again. Her term as leader ended in June 2024.

Annika Saarikko will leave her role as a Member of Parliament in September 2025. This is because she became the head of an organization that focuses on student health.

Annika Saarikko has two children. She welcomed her third child in July 2024.
