About Antti Rinne
Antti Rinne was born in Helsinki, Finland. He studied law at the University of Helsinki and became a lawyer. Before entering politics, he worked as a leader for several trade unions. These unions helped protect the rights of workers in different jobs. He led the Union of Private Sector Professionals from 2002 to 2005. Then, he led the Union of Salaried Employees from 2005 to 2010. Finally, he was the head of Trade Union Pro from 2010 to 2014.
Antti Rinne's Political Career
Antti Rinne became the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) in May 2014. He won against the previous leader, Jutta Urpilainen. He was re-elected for a second term as party leader in 2017.
From 2014 to 2015, he held two important government jobs. He was the Minister of Finance, in charge of the country's money matters. He was also the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland, helping the Prime Minister lead the government.
Rinne became a Member of Parliament in 2015 and served until 2023. In the 2019 Finnish parliamentary election, his party, the Social Democrats, won the most votes. After this victory, Rinne first served as the Speaker of Parliament. Then, on June 6, 2019, he was appointed Prime Minister of Finland.
His Time as Prime Minister
Antti Rinne and his government resigned on December 3, 2019. This happened because another party in the government, the Centre Party, decided to stop supporting him. There had been a big strike by postal workers in Finland, which caused some disagreements.
After his resignation, President Sauli Niinistö asked Rinne to continue leading the country temporarily. This was until a new government could be formed. On December 10, 2019, Sanna Marin was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Finland.
After stepping down as Prime Minister, Rinne was elected as the First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament on December 11, 2019. He served in this role for about a year.
In the 2023 Finnish parliamentary election, Antti Rinne ran again but was not re-elected to Parliament. In August 2023, he took on a new role as the General Secretary of SAMAK for three years.
