Katri Kulmuni (born September 4, 1987) is a Finnish politician. She was the deputy prime minister and leader of the Centre Party from 2019 to 2020. She was also a Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2024. In 2024, she was chosen to be a member of the European Parliament.
Early Life and Education
Katri Kulmuni grew up on an old family farm. Her family has lived there since the 1400s. Her father runs a small business, and her mother is a special education teacher.
Katri's hometown, Tornio, is very close to the border with Sweden. She went to school in Haparanda, Sweden. This was a special school that taught both Finnish and Swedish.
Kulmuni studied at the University of Lapland. She earned a Master of Social Science degree in 2018. She can speak five languages: Finnish, Swedish, English, French, and Russian. Her language skills were very helpful when she was a minister.
Katri Kulmuni is married to Jyrki Peisa, who is a lawyer. They have two children together.
Political Journey and Roles
Katri Kulmuni joined the Centre Party when she was 18 years old. She started her political work in her hometown of Tornio. In 2008, she ran in the local elections, but she was not elected to the city council yet.
From 2009 to 2012, she was a member of the Tornio Youth and Culture Committee. She later received the most votes in Tornio's local elections in 2012, 2017, and 2021. She led the Tornio city council from 2013 to 2019.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Kulmuni was first elected to the Parliament of Finland in 2015. She represented the Lapland area. She was re-elected in 2019 and 2023.
After the 2019 elections, she became the Minister of Economic Affairs. This was part of Antti Rinne's government.
Leading the Centre Party
In 2016, Kulmuni became a deputy chairperson of the Centre Party. On September 7, 2019, she was elected as the leader of the Centre Party. She won against Antti Kaikkonen.
Soon after, she became the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland. This happened on September 12, 2019. When the government changed, Kulmuni became the Minister of Finance in Sanna Marin's government.
Stepping Down from Ministerial Roles
On June 5, 2020, Katri Kulmuni decided to step down from her roles. She resigned as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister. This decision came after it was found that she had received media training that was quite expensive. She chose to pay back the cost herself.
She explained that she wanted to take responsibility for what happened. She also did not want the Centre Party to be affected. On September 5, 2020, Annika Saarikko took over as the leader of the Centre Party.
After 2020: New Roles
In 2022, Katri Kulmuni was elected to the regional council of Lapland. She received the most votes in the Lapland area.
On February 14, 2024, Kulmuni announced she would run for the European Parliament. She wanted to focus on natural resources and stop too much EU regulation in Finland. She also wanted to help the Centre Party gain more support.
Kulmuni received many votes and was elected to the European Parliament. She got the most votes in the Oulu and Lapland areas. Just a week before the election, she welcomed her second child.
In the European Parliament, Kulmuni joined the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. She was happy with this role because the committee deals with important topics like Finnish forests.
