Katri Kulmuni (born on September 4, 1987) is a Finnish politician. She served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland and the leader of the Centre Party from 2019 to 2020. She was also a Member of Parliament for Finland from 2015 to 2024. In 2024, she was elected to the European Parliament.

Early Life and Education
Katri Kulmuni grew up on an old family farm. Her family has lived there since the 1400s. Her father ran a small business in the countryside. Her mother was a special education teacher. Katri's hometown, Tornio, is very close to the border with Sweden. She went to school in Haparanda, Sweden. This was a special school shared by Tornio and Haparanda.
Katri Kulmuni studied at the University of Lapland. She earned a Master of Social Science degree in 2018. She is good at languages and speaks five: Finnish, Swedish, English, French, and Russian. People noticed her language skills when she was a minister.
Katri Kulmuni is married to Jyrki Peisa, who is a lawyer. They have two children together.
Political Career
Katri Kulmuni joined the Centre Party when she was 18 years old. She started her political journey in her hometown of Tornio. This was in the local elections of 2008. She was not elected to the city council then. However, she served on the Tornio Youth and Culture Committee from 2009 to 2012.
She received the most votes in Tornio in the local elections of 2012, 2017, and 2021. She led the Tornio city council from 2013 to 2019. From December 2010 to June 2011, she worked as a press assistant. She helped the Minister for Foreign Trade and Development, Paavo Väyrynen.
Kulmuni was elected to the Parliament of Finland in 2015. She represented the Lapland area. She was reelected in 2019 and 2023. After the 2019 elections, she became the Minister of Economic Affairs. This was in Antti Rinne's government.
In 2016, Kulmuni was chosen as the deputy leader of the Centre Party. On September 7, 2019, she won the election to become the leader of the Centre Party. Five days later, she became the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland. After the government changed, Kulmuni became the Minister of Finance.
On June 5, 2020, Kulmuni stepped down as Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister. This happened after it was found that she had received media training that cost a lot of money. The cost was billed to her ministries. She announced that she would pay back the cost herself. On June 8, Matti Vanhanen became the new Minister of Finance. Kulmuni explained that she took responsibility for the situation. She said she did not want her party to suffer. She also paid the training bills from her own money.
On September 5, 2020, Annika Saarikko took over as the leader of the Centre Party.
After 2020
In the 2022 county elections, Kulmuni was elected to the regional council. This council helps manage wellbeing services in Lapland. She received the most votes in the Lapland area.
On February 14, 2024, Kulmuni announced she would run for the European Parliament. She wanted to focus on natural resources in the European Parliament. She also wanted to stop too much EU regulation on Finland's natural resources. She did not support increasing shared debt among countries. Kulmuni also hoped to help the Centre Party gain more support. She received 67,028 votes and was elected to the European Parliament. She got the most votes in the Oulu and Lapland areas. A week before the election, she had her second child.
In the European Parliament, Kulmuni was chosen for the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety. She was happy with this role. This committee deals with important topics like Finnish forests and forestry.
