Sanna Mirella Marin (born 16 November 1985) is a Finnish politician. She served as the prime minister of Finland from 2019 to 2023. When she took office at age 34, she was the youngest prime minister in Finland's history.

Marin was also the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) from 2020 to 2023. She was a member of Finland's Parliament from 2015 to 2023. After leaving office, she became a strategic adviser at the Tony Blair Institute.

As prime minister, Marin led Finland's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She also strongly supported Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022. A major event during her time in office was Finland's decision to join NATO, a military alliance. Finland officially became a member in April 2023.

Early Life and Schooling

Sanna Mirella Marin was born on 16 November 1985 in Helsinki, Finland. She later lived in Espoo and Pirkkala before her family settled in Tampere. Her parents separated when she was a baby. Marin was raised by her mother and her mother's female partner. She has described her family as a "rainbow family."

Marin graduated from Pirkkala High School in 2004. To support herself while studying, she worked jobs like being a cashier and working in a bakery. She was the first person in her family to go to a university. She earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree from the University of Tampere.

Start in Politics

Marin became interested in politics when she was 20 years old. In 2006, she joined the Social Democratic Youth group. She served as its vice president from 2010 to 2012.

In 2012, she was elected to the City Council of Tampere. She quickly became the head of the council, a position she held from 2013 to 2017. Videos of her leading council meetings helped her become well-known in Finland.

In 2015, Marin was elected to the Finnish Parliament. She was re-elected in 2019 and became the Minister of Transport and Communications. In 2020, she was chosen to be the leader of the Social Democratic Party.

In December 2019, Sanna Marin became the Prime Minister of Finland. At 34, she was the youngest person to ever hold the job in Finland. She led a government made of five different political parties. At the time, 12 of the 19 ministers in her government were women.

Responding to World Events

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Marin's government declared a state of emergency to help slow the spread of the virus in Finland.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Marin strongly condemned the attack. She said that European countries needed to stop buying oil and gas from Russia. She visited Ukraine to show her support and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

For a long time, Finland chose not to join NATO, a group of countries that promise to defend each other. However, after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, many people in Finland changed their minds.

In May 2022, Marin and President Sauli Niinistö announced that Finland would apply for NATO membership. Marin said joining would make Finland safer. The Finnish Parliament voted strongly in favor of the decision. Finland officially became a member of NATO on April 4, 2023, during Marin's time as prime minister.

Protecting Sámi Rights

Marin tried to pass a new law to better protect the rights of the Sámi people, who are the Indigenous people of northern Europe. The law had been discussed for many years but had never passed.

Marin's government sent the law to Parliament for a vote. However, it was blocked by some political parties and did not pass before the next election. Marin said she was very disappointed that the law failed.

2023 Election

In the parliamentary election on April 2, 2023, Marin's Social Democratic Party came in third place. The National Coalition Party, led by Petteri Orpo, won the most seats. Marin's party gained more votes and seats than in the last election, but it was not enough to form a new government. Petteri Orpo became the new prime minister on June 20, 2023.

Life After Being Prime Minister

After the 2023 election, Marin announced she would step down as the leader of her party. In September 2023, she also resigned from the Finnish Parliament.

She then started a new job as a strategic adviser at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. This organization works with political leaders around the world. She also founded her own company for public speaking and consulting. In 2024, she joined a group working to help Ukraine get closer to Europe and its security organizations.

Personal Life

Marin has described herself as coming from a "rainbow family" because she was raised by two mothers.

She has a daughter, born in 2018, with her former husband Markus Räikkönen. Marin and Räikkönen were together for 19 years and married in 2020. They announced their divorce in May 2023. Marin is a vegetarian.
