Sanna Mirella Marin (born 16 November 1985) is a Finnish former politician. She served as the Prime Minister of Finland from 2019 to 2023. She was also the leader of the Social Democratic Party of Finland (SDP) from 2020 to 2023. Before becoming Prime Minister, she was a Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2023.

Marin was born in Helsinki. As a child, she moved to Tampere with her mother. She later graduated from the University of Tampere in 2017. She joined the Social Democratic Youth in 2006. She became the vice president of the group from 2010 to 2012.

She served on the City Council of Tampere. Later, she was elected as a Member of Parliament. In December 2019, Marin became Prime Minister. She was 34 years old, making her the youngest person to hold this office in Finland's history.

As Prime Minister, Marin led Finland's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. She strongly spoke out against the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. She supported Ukraine during the conflict. In May 2022, she announced that Finland would apply to join NATO. Finland successfully joined NATO in April 2023. After the 2023 election, her party came in third place. She was succeeded as Prime Minister by Petteri Orpo. Marin retired from Finnish politics in September 2023. She became a strategic adviser at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change.

Early Life and Education

Sanna Mirella Marin was born on 16 November 1985 in Helsinki. She also lived in Espoo and Pirkkala before moving to Tampere. Her parents separated when she was very young. Her family faced money problems. Marin was raised by her mother and her mother's female partner.

Marin finished high school in 2004 when she was 19. She worked in a bakery and as a cashier while studying. She earned her bachelor's degree in 2012 and her master's degree in 2017. Both degrees were in Administrative Science from the University of Tampere.

Starting in Politics

Marin's political journey began when she was 20 years old. She joined the Social Democratic Youth in 2006. She served as its director from 2010 to 2012.

In 2008, she first tried to get elected to the City Council of Tampere but did not win. She tried again and was elected in 2012. She quickly became the chairwoman of the City Council, serving from 2013 to 2017. She became well-known after videos of her leading meetings were shared online.

Marin was elected as the second deputy chairman of the SDP in 2014. In 2015, she became a Member of the Finnish Parliament. She represented the Pirkanmaa electoral district. She was re-elected four years later. In June 2019, she became the Minister of Transport and Communications. In August 2020, Marin was elected as the leader of the SDP.

In December 2019, the SDP chose Marin to become Prime Minister. She won a close vote against Antti Lindtman. Many of the ministers in her government were women. At 34, she became Finland's youngest Prime Minister ever. She was also the youngest serving state leader in the world for a short time.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Marin's government declared a state of emergency. This helped manage the spread of the virus in Finland. In October 2020, Marin even represented Sweden at a European Council meeting. This happened when the Swedish Prime Minister could not attend.

Marin's party came third in the 2023 Finnish parliamentary election. She announced she would step down as SDP leader. She was succeeded as Prime Minister by Petteri Orpo on 20 June 2023.

Foreign Policy

In March 2021, Marin spoke out against the treatment of Uyghurs in China. She said that trade should not make countries ignore such issues.

In early 2022, Marin stated that Finland had the right to join NATO. This was in response to Russia's actions near the Ukrainian border. On 24 February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia then warned Finland and Sweden about joining NATO. Both countries had condemned the invasion.

In March 2022, Marin said the EU needed to stop relying on Russian oil. She explained that buying Russian energy helped fund the war. On 12 May 2022, President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Marin announced that Finland should apply for NATO membership. They said it would make Finland safer.

On 15 May 2022, Finland officially applied for NATO membership. The Finnish parliament approved the plan with a large vote. Marin visited Kyiv in Ukraine on 26 May 2022. She met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and visited war-torn cities. She also signed an agreement to help rebuild Ukraine's education system.

In late 2022, Marin visited New Zealand and Australia. She was the first Finnish Prime Minister to visit these countries. She discussed trade, the global economy, the war in Ukraine, and climate change.

Marin also suggested that Finland could discuss giving F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets to Ukraine. However, the Finnish President and Defence Minister said these jets were needed for Finland's own security. Marin stressed that Ukraine needed heavier weapons for defense.

In December 2021, Marin went to a night club in Helsinki. Earlier, she had been in contact with a minister who later tested positive for COVID-19. Marin was told she did not need to self-isolate because she was vaccinated. Later, she received messages saying she should isolate, but she did not see them. She apologized on Facebook for her mistake. The Chancellor of Justice later cleared her of any wrongdoing.

2023 Election

On 2 April 2023, Marin's party came in third place in the 2023 Finnish parliamentary election. She accepted the defeat to the National Coalition Party, led by Petteri Orpo. Despite her party's ranking, the SDP gained more votes and seats. Marin was re-elected as an MP with a record number of votes in her district.

On 5 April, Marin announced she would resign as the leader of the Social Democratic Party. This happened at the party's congress in the autumn.

After Being Prime Minister (2023–Present)

On 5 April 2023, Marin announced her resignation as the leader of the Social Democratic Party. Antti Lindtman succeeded her on 1 September 2023.

In June 2023, Marin started her own company, MA/PI Oy. This company focuses on public speaking, publishing, and consulting. In July, she was listed as a speaker by the Harry Walker Agency. This agency arranges speakers for international events.

In August 2023, Marin suggested Jutta Urpilainen as the SDP's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

On 7 September 2023, Marin announced she would resign as an MP. She planned to become a strategic advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Her resignation from the Finnish Parliament was approved on 12 September 2023.

In January 2024, Marin joined a new group called the International Task Force on Security and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine. This group aims to create a plan for Ukraine to work more closely with European and Atlantic security organizations.

Personal Life

Marin describes her family as a "rainbow family." She was raised by two female parents. She was the first person in her family to attend university.

Marin has a daughter, born in 2018, with her former partner Markus Räikkönen. In August 2020, Marin and Räikkönen got married at the Prime Minister's official residence, Kesäranta. They lived in Tampere, but stayed at Kesäranta during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple filed for divorce in May 2023.

Marin is a vegetarian.
