The Anredera vesicaria is a type of plant often called Texas madeiravine or sacasile. It is a climbing plant, or vine, that grows in warm places. This plant, along with a close relative called A. cordifolia, are the only two plants from their family (Basellaceae) that grow naturally in the United States.

People sometimes grow these plants in their gardens. They are liked for their pretty flowers that smell very nice.

About the Texas Madeiravine

Anredera cordifolia is found in many warm parts of the world. Anredera vesicaria is originally from Texas, Mexico, Central America, the West Indies, and Venezuela. It has also started growing in Florida.

Where Does It Grow?

In Texas and Florida, you can find the Texas madeiravine growing in thick bushes. It also likes disturbed areas. These are places like roadsides and along fences. It grows at elevations less than 500 meters (about 1,650 feet) above sea level.

What Does It Look Like?

The Anredera vesicaria is a vine that can twist and climb very high. It can reach up to 8 meters (about 27 feet) tall!

Its flowers are small and cream-colored. Each flower is less than 2 millimeters (0.08 inches) wide. But they grow in large groups called racemes or panicles. These flower clusters can be as long as 70 centimeters (about 28 inches). The flowers have a strong and very pleasant smell.
