Ansemund was a powerful leader, known as a Gothic count, who ruled the city of Nîmes from 752 until he died in 754.

Ansemund: A Gothic Leader

Ansemund was an important Gothic count in the 8th century. He was in charge of Nîmes, a city in what is now France. His time as a leader was short but important because of the big changes happening around him.

Choosing a Side

In 752, Ansemund and other Gothic counts from cities like Melguelh, Agde, and Béziers made a big decision. They decided to stop supporting the Emir of Córdoba, who was a Muslim ruler in Spain. Instead, they chose to support the Frankish Kingdom, which was a powerful Christian kingdom led by Pepin the Short. Ansemund seemed to be the main leader among these Gothic counts.

The Fight for Narbonne

After switching their loyalty, the Gothic counts and the Franks worked together. They started to attack the city of Narbonne, which was controlled by the Moors (Muslims from North Africa). However, the Moors fought back strongly, and the siege of Narbonne was difficult.

Ansemund's End

In 754, something unexpected happened. A group of people who were against the Franks, led by someone named Ermeniard, killed Ansemund. This rebellion, however, did not last long and was not successful. After Ansemund's death, the Frankish king, Pepin the Short, chose a new count for Nîmes. His name was Radulf.
