A Young Duke's Life
Anthony was born in August 1384. His father was Philip II, Duke of Burgundy. His mother was Margaret III, Countess of Flanders. He was also the brother of John the Fearless.
Becoming a Duke
In 1406, a relative named Joanna passed away. She had no children. This meant that Anthony inherited her lands. He became the Duke of Brabant, Lothier, and Limburg. These were important areas in what is now Belgium and the Netherlands.
The Battle of Agincourt
In 1415, Anthony joined the French army. They were fighting against the English in the Battle of Agincourt. Anthony arrived late to the battlefield. He was so eager to join the fight that he quickly put on whatever armor he could find. He even wore a coat made from a trumpeter's flag!
Anthony's Bravery and Fate
Anthony fought very bravely in the battle. However, he was captured by English archers. The English army was much smaller than the French. They were worried about guarding their prisoners while the battle was still going on. The English king, Henry V of England, ordered that some prisoners be executed. This was a tough decision made during the chaos of battle. Sadly, Anthony was among those who died. The English did not know he was such an important duke. They did not realize how much money they could have received for his ransom.
Family and Marriages
Anthony married twice during his life.
First Marriage
On February 21, 1402, Anthony married Jeanne of Saint-Pol in Arras. She passed away in 1407. They had two sons together:
- John IV, Duke of Brabant (1403–1427)
- Philip of St. Pol (1404–1430)
Second Marriage
Anthony married again on July 16, 1409, in Brussels. His second wife was Elisabeth of Görlitz. She was the Duchess of Luxembourg. They did not have any children together.
