Tony Andersen's Political Journey
Tony Andersen has held several important roles in the government of Nunatsiavut. Nunatsiavut is a self-governing region for the Inuit people in Labrador.
Early Leadership Roles
Tony Andersen briefly served as the Acting President of Nunatsiavut. This happened from November 14 to December 14, 2007. He took on this role after William Andersen III resigned.
He also served as the AngajukKâk of Nain. The AngajukKâk is like the Mayor of the community. He held this position from 2006 to 2008.
Becoming First Minister
In 2019, Tony Andersen became the acting First Minister of Nunatsiavut. He took over after Kate Mitchell resigned from the role.
In 2022, after a general election, Andersen was officially appointed as the First Minister. He continues to serve in this important leadership position. He is one of two members who represent Nain in the Nunatsiavut Assembly.
Family in Politics
Tony Andersen was born to Edgar and Muriel Andersen. Politics seems to run in his family!
His brother, Wally Andersen, is also a member of the Nunatsiavut Assembly. Tony's nephew, Thomas Evans, also serves in the Assembly.
Another niece, Lela Evans, was elected to the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2019. She won against his nephew, Randy Edmunds.
