Anthony Irby (died 1625) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Anthony Irby (born 1547 – died 6 October 1625) was an English lawyer and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like being a Member of Parliament (MP) today. He served in Parliament at different times between 1589 and 1622.

Early Life and Education

Anthony Irby was the only son of Thomas Irby and Isabel Serjeant. He started studying at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1559. Later, in 1569, he became a lawyer through Lincoln's Inn, which is one of the places where lawyers are trained in England. His uncle was Leonard Irby. In 1564, he helped manage the drainage systems in Lincolnshire as a commissioner for sewers.

His Work in Law and Parliament

Anthony Irby became a very important person in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire. He was the recorder, which means he was a judge who advised the town on legal matters. He was also the town clerk, handling official records.

In 1588, some people in Stamford tried to remove him from his job as recorder. Because of this, when he was chosen to be an MP that year, it was for Boston, not Stamford.

However, the Privy Council (a group of advisors to the Queen) stepped in. In March 1589, they ordered that Irby, who they called "a gentleman of good discretion, credit and learning" (meaning he was smart, trustworthy, and educated), should get his job back in Stamford.

He continued to do well in his legal career. He was re-elected as MP for Boston several times: in 1592, 1597, and 1601, during the time of Elizabeth I of England. After James I of England became King, Irby was elected MP for Boston again in 1604.

In 1613, he became the recorder for Boston, a job he held until he passed away in 1625. He was also elected MP for Boston in 1614 and again in 1621. Around 1621, he became a Master in Chancery, which was a senior legal position in the court system.

His Family Life

On 22 December 1575, Anthony Irby married Alice Tash, who was a widow and the daughter of Thomas Welbye. They had five sons and two daughters. Anthony Irby was buried in Whaplode.

His Son, Anthony Irby

His oldest son, also named Anthony (1577–1610), also became a Member of Parliament. This younger Anthony was knighted by King James I in 1603. He was also an investor in the Virginia Company, which helped set up the first English colonies in America.

In February 1603, the younger Anthony married Elizabeth Peyton. They had three sons and two daughters. Their oldest son, Anthony, later became the Sheriff of Lincolnshire and also represented Boston in Parliament.
