Anthony "Tuba Fats" Lacen (born September 15, 1950 – died January 11, 2004) was a famous jazz musician. He was a talented tubist, which means he played the tuba. Tuba Fats was also a band leader. He was known as New Orleans' most famous tuba player. He played traditional New Orleans jazz and blues music for over 40 years.

He was born, lived most of his life, and passed away in New Orleans, Louisiana. His music was loved around the world. He traveled on many tours to places like Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America.

A Life in Music

For many years, Tuba Fats led a band in Jackson Square. This famous spot is in the French Quarter of New Orleans. His band played music for tips from people passing by. He was also known for helping young musicians. He encouraged them to follow their dreams in music.

Playing with Brass Bands

Tuba Fats played with many professional brass bands. These bands are a big part of New Orleans music. Some of the famous bands he played with include the Young Tuxedo, E. Gibson, Doc Paulin, Onward, Algiers, Treme, and Olympia Brass Bands.

He also had his own band. It was called Tuba Fats & the Chosen Few Brass Band. He made many important jazz recordings. Many of these recordings were released under his own name on the Jazz Crusade label. Tuba Fats was married to Linda Young, a blues singer. They often toured together in Europe.

His Final Farewell

Tuba Fats was buried in a Catholic cemetery. This was St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. His burial took place on January 18, 2004. It was a special event known as a jazz funeral. This type of funeral is a unique New Orleans tradition.
