Sir Anthony Joseph Mamo (born January 9, 1909 – died May 1, 2008) was a very important person in Malta's history. He was the first ever President of Malta, which is like the head of the country. Before that, he was the last Governor-General of Malta. This means he was the Queen's representative in Malta before it became a republic. Sir Anthony was also the first Maltese person to hold the Governor-General position.

Life and Early Career

Sir Anthony Mamo was born in Birkirkara, Malta. His parents were Joseph Mamo and Carla Brincat. He went to the University of Malta where he studied law. He earned his first degree in 1931 and became a lawyer in 1934.

After working as a lawyer for a short time, Sir Anthony decided to work for the government. In 1936, he joined a special group. This group was tasked with updating all the laws of Malta. This big job took six years to finish.

Working During World War II

During this time, World War II started. Even though the law work continued, Sir Anthony also helped people affected by the war. He worked to help refugees and those who were struggling because of the war.

Important Roles in Malta

Sir Anthony Mamo was never directly involved in politics. Instead, he focused on his legal career and public service.

Chief Justice of Malta

In 1957, he became the Chief Justice of Malta. This is the highest judge in the country. He served in this important role until 1971.

Governor-General of Malta

In 1971, Sir Anthony Mamo was appointed as the Governor-General of Malta. He was the first Maltese person to hold this position. The Governor-General represented the British Queen in Malta. He served as Governor-General until December 13, 1974.

First President of Malta

On December 13, 1974, Malta became a republic. This meant it was no longer under the British Crown. On this day, Sir Anthony Mamo became the very first President of Malta. He served as president until December 27, 1976, when Anton Buttigieg took over. In 1959, he was given the honour of being a Knight Bachelor.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir Anthony Mamo was married to Lady Margaret Agius. They got married in 1939 and were together until her death in 2002. They had three children: Josephine, Monica, and John.

Sir Anthony Mamo passed away on May 1, 2008, when he was 99 years old. He died at Casa Arkati in Mosta, Malta. A special cancer treatment center at Mater Dei Hospital was named after him. It is called the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre.
