Anthony John Muirhead (born November 4, 1890 – died October 29, 1939) was a British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He also had a notable career in the British Army.
Anthony Muirhead went to school at Eton College. He also studied at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and Magdalen College. In 1929, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Wells in Somerset. He kept this job until he passed away in 1939, at the age of 48.
His Military Service
Anthony Muirhead was a brave soldier. He served in the First World War. He was part of a group called the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars. During the war, he reached the rank of captain.
Awards and Promotions
In 1917, he received the Military Cross. This award is given for bravery in battle. He earned another special mention in 1918. This was for his work as a major during the war. In 1919, he was promoted to a higher rank, called brevet major.
In 1924, he joined a different army unit. It was the 100th (Worcestershire and Oxfordshire Yeomanry) Field Brigade. This was part of the Territorial Army. He became a full major in this unit. Later, in 1933, he was promoted to brevet lieutenant-colonel. By 1936, he was a full lieutenant-colonel. He was in charge of his brigade. In 1939, he moved to the 53rd Anti-Tank Regiment.
His Political Work
Anthony Muirhead also had an important role in the government. He served in the National Government. This government was led by Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain.
Government Roles
From 1937 to 1938, he was the Under-Secretary of State for Air. This meant he helped manage things related to the air force. Then, from 1938 to 1939, he was the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for India and Burma. In this role, he helped with matters concerning India and Burma.
His Passing
Anthony Muirhead passed away on October 29, 1939. He was buried in the churchyard. This churchyard is in Great Haseley, Oxfordshire.
