Anthony Eugene Peeler (born November 25, 1969) is a former professional basketball player from the United States. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1992 to 2005. People knew him for his strong defense and amazing athletic skills. After his playing career, he became an assistant coach at Virginia Union University.
High School and College Years
Anthony Peeler was a fantastic high school basketball player in Kansas City, Missouri. He earned the special title of Mr. Show-Me Basketball. This award is given to the best high school player in Missouri.
He was also chosen for the McDonald's All-American team in his final year of high school. This team features the best young players in the country. He played alongside future NBA stars like Alonzo Mourning and Shawn Kemp.
Peeler decided to play college basketball at the University of Missouri. He became one of the school's greatest players ever. He was known for his scoring, passing, and stealing the ball.
He averaged 16.8 points per game during his time at Missouri. He finished as the school's third-highest scorer with 1,970 points. He also set records for assists (497) and steals (196).
In 1992, his senior year, he was named the Big Eight Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year. He was also chosen as a second-team All-American. He scored a career-high 43 points in a game against rival Kansas.
In 2006, Anthony Peeler was honored by the University of Missouri. He was named to the school's 30-member All-Century team. This team celebrated 100 years of basketball at the university.
Professional Basketball Career
After college, Anthony Peeler was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1992 NBA draft. He was the 15th player chosen overall. Many experts thought he was one of the best shooting guards available.
In his first year with the Lakers, Peeler played in 77 games. He averaged 10.4 points per game. He was the first Lakers rookie since 1984 to average double figures in scoring. He also set a new Lakers rookie record for three-point shooting.
Peeler played for several other NBA teams during his career. These teams included the Vancouver Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards. He averaged 9.7 points per game over his entire NBA career.
During the 2003–04 NBA season, while playing for the Sacramento Kings, Peeler was excellent at shooting three-pointers. He led the entire league in three-point accuracy, making 48.2 percent of his shots.
After the NBA
After retiring from playing basketball, Anthony Peeler went back to college. He finished his degree at Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia.
He then began a new career as a coach. He worked as an assistant coach in China. He has also shown interest in coaching college basketball in the United States.
