About Anton Quintana
His Early Life
Anton Quintana was born in Amsterdam in 1937. He had a twin brother named André. When Anton was two years old, his father left the family. His mother passed away when he was ten. After this, Anton and his brother moved to an orphanage in Amsterdam.
Anton and André both became writers. André asked Anton to use a different name for his writing. So, Anton decided to use his mother's last name, Quintana. He also focused on writing different kinds of stories, like mysteries and books for children.
Radio and TV Work
Anton Quintana also wrote for radio and television. His first radio play was Ontmoeting in de herfst in 1962. He won awards for his radio play De vrouw onder het schavot in 1970 and for his television play Het zout der aarde in 1973.
In the 1970s, he adapted the popular Martin Beck detective stories into a radio play series. It was called Moordbrigade Stockholm. He also wrote the popular TV series De Kris Pusaka in 1977 and 1978.
His Books and Stories
Quintana started writing for children in 1973 with his book Padjelanta. Later, he wrote comic stories for the children's magazine Pep. These stories had fun illustrations by artists like Hans G. Kresse.
In 1982, he published De bavianenkoning. This book was inspired by his travels to Sumatra. He won the important Gouden Griffel award in 1983 for this book.
Another famous book by Quintana is Het boek van Bod Pa, published in 1995. This book won two big awards in 1996: the Gouden Uil and the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs. His last book, De hemelruiter (2000), was a follow-up to Het boek van Bod Pa.
Anton Quintana's books have been translated into many languages, including German and English. He also translated several stories and books into Dutch himself.
