Anton Stander (born June 16, 1867 – died April 2, 1952) was an important pioneer and gold prospector. He became famous during the exciting Klondike Gold Rush. Anton Stander was known as one of the six richest prospectors in the Klondike region.

He moved to the United States in 1886 from Slovenia. In 1896, he arrived in Alaska. That year, he found a lot of gold near Bonanza Creek. This discovery made him very wealthy.

Life in the Klondike

Anton Stander became a very successful gold prospector. He was one of the wealthiest people during the Klondike Gold Rush. His hard work and luck helped him find a fortune in gold.

A Golden Romance

From 1897, Anton Stander lived in Dawson City. He met a dancer and opera singer named Violet Raymond. Anton was very generous with Violet. They married in 1901 in San Francisco. After their wedding, they settled in Seattle.

Their wedding gift was said to be a box filled with gold. It was worth about $100,000. They also went on a honeymoon to faraway places. They visited Japan and China, then traveled to Paris.

Business Ventures

Anton and Violet Stander invested their gold wisely. In 1900, they became owners of the Holyoke Building in Seattle. From 1905 to 1906, they also owned a large hotel. This hotel was called Stander's Hotel. It had 250 rooms and was a very grand place.

Violet believed they had taken about half a million dollars in gold from the mines. This shows how much wealth they had gained.

Later Life

Less than two years after opening the hotel, Anton and Violet divorced. They divided their wealth, which was about $900,000.

There are different stories about where Anton Stander passed away. Some say he died in a home for pioneers in Sitka, Alaska. Others say he died in Multnomah, Oregon.
