Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Antoni Palau Dulcet (born in Montblanc, Spain, in 1867 and passed away in Barcelona in 1954) was a very important librarian and expert on books. He was known for writing a huge book called Manual del librero hispano americano. This book was like a giant list of all the scientific and literary books published in Spain and Latin America. He also wrote many guides about his home region, the "Conca de Barbera."

Biography

Antoni Palau Dulcet spent a lot of time studying how the printing press first came to Spain. He wrote a book about this in 1952.

His most famous work is the Manual del librero hispano-americano. Imagine a huge encyclopedia that lists almost every book ever printed in Spanish-speaking countries. It even included how much these books were worth! The first edition came out between 1923 and 1945 and had seven big volumes.

Later, a second edition was published from 1948 to 1977. This one was even bigger, with 28 volumes! His son, Agustín Palau Claveras, helped finish it and added seven more volumes of indexes. In total, it became 35 volumes, making it a massive resource for anyone interested in old books.

Antoni Palau Dulcet also created special lists of books by famous writers like Miguel de Cervantes and Francisco de Quevedo. He wrote an interesting book about his own life called Memoirs of a Catalan Bookseller (1935). This book showed how much he loved learning and helping others with knowledge.

In 1949, his hometown of Montblanc honored him. They named him their "favorite son." The mayor of Montblanc gave him a special silver medal on July 31, 1949.
