Antoni Roig Muntaner (born November 14, 1931 – died June 4, 2019) was a smart Spanish scientist and politician. He was famous for his work with very tiny particles called macromolecules. He also helped create the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), which is a big university in Spain.

His Life Story

Antoni Roig finished high school in Palma. He then studied Chemical Sciences at the University of Valencia, graduating in 1953. He earned his highest degree, a doctorate, from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1958.

At the Complutense University, he started as a teaching assistant. Later, he became a full-time teacher. After getting his doctorate, he moved to the United States for two years. He studied at Duke University in Durham and then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. In 1963, he also studied in Strasbourg, France.

In 1962, Antoni Roig joined the Rocasolano Institute of Physical Chemistry. This institute is part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). He led the High Polymers Laboratory there until 1971.

In 1971, he moved to the University of the Basque Country. He was the director of the Physical Chemistry Department for a year. He also became a professor of Physical Chemistry. Soon after, he moved back to Palma. There, he helped start the new Faculty of Sciences. This faculty was part of the Autonomous University of Barcelona at the time.

From 1973, Antoni Roig was in charge of all university centers in Palma. He served as a vice-rector for two universities: the Central University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The university centers in Mallorca depended on these institutions.

Between 1979 and 1981, he led the UIB's Management Committee. His hard work helped create the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). In 1981, Antoni Roig was named the Honorary Rector of the UIB. During this time, he was also part of a scientific committee that advised the government on science and technology.

After 1981, Antoni Roig took on different roles in the government. In 1981 and 1982, he was the general director of Scientific Policy for the Ministry of Education and Science. Later, he went to the University of Alcalá. He became the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Sciences in 1984, and then the Dean in 1985 and 1986.

In 1987, Antoni Roig started a new chapter in politics. He became the head of Urban Planning for the City Council of Palma. He held this position from 1987 to 1991.

From 1995 to 1999, he directed the Chemistry Department at the University of the Balearic Islands. In 1999, he was appointed General Director. His job was to create a plan for Research and Technological Development (R&D) for the Balearic Islands government. Finally, in 2001, he was named an emeritus professor at the UIB. This means he was a retired professor who still kept his title because of his important contributions.

His Important Work

As a researcher, Antoni Roig published over fifty scientific papers. His research was always in the field of Macromolecular Physical Chemistry. This area studies how very large molecules behave.

He guided many students through their doctoral studies. He also started a successful research group focused on macromolecules. Members of this group now work at many different universities in Spain.

Antoni Roig also wrote two important textbooks on Physical Chemistry. He wrote them with Mateo Díaz Peña. These books were published in 1972 and were used widely by university students in Spain and Latin America.
