Antonia Terzi (born April 29, 1971 – died October 26, 2021) was a brilliant Italian aerodynamicist. An aerodynamicist is an engineer who studies how air moves around objects. This knowledge helps them design things like cars and airplanes to be very fast and efficient. Antonia Terzi used her skills to work on Formula One racing cars for famous teams like Ferrari and Williams.
Education and Early Life
Antonia Terzi was born in a town called Mirandola in Italy. She loved learning about how things work. She earned a special degree called a Master's in Materials Engineering from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. This degree taught her about different materials and how to use them to build things.
Later, she moved to the United Kingdom and earned a PhD from the University of Exeter. Her PhD focused on aerodynamics, which is the science of how air interacts with moving objects. This was perfect for her future career in designing fast cars.
Career in Racing and Beyond
Antonia Terzi started her career in the design department at Ferrari. She worked under a well-known designer named Rory Byrne. At Ferrari, she helped create some of the fastest Formula One cars.
In 2001, the Williams team asked her to join them. She became their chief aerodynamicist. This meant she was in charge of making sure the Williams F1 cars were shaped perfectly to cut through the air and go as fast as possible. She left Williams in 2004.
After her time in Formula One, Antonia Terzi became an assistant professor at The Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. There, she worked with Professor Wubbo Ockels. She was the main designer for a very cool project called the TU Delft Superbus. This was a special electric bus designed to travel very fast on special roads.
From 2014 to 2019, she led the aerodynamics team at Bentley Motors Ltd. Bentley is famous for making luxury cars. Antonia helped make sure these cars were not only beautiful but also very efficient in how they moved through the air.
In 2020, she became a full professor at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia. She continued to share her knowledge and passion for engineering with new students.
Death
Antonia Terzi sadly passed away in a car accident in the UK on October 26, 2021.
