Antonina Georgievna Borissova (1903–1970) was a Soviet botanist. A botanist is a scientist who studies plants. She was an expert in the plants found in the deserts and semi-desert areas of central Asia.
Borissova discovered and named 195 different types of land plants. This is a very high number. It means she named the ninth-highest number of plant species among all female scientists.
Plants She Identified
Antonina Borissova spent her career studying and identifying plants. When a botanist "identifies" a plant, it means they discover a new species and give it a scientific name. This helps other scientists know exactly which plant they are talking about.
Here are some of the plants she identified:
- Rhodiola arctica Boriss. (This plant is also known as Rhodiola rosea). It grows in the Russian steppe.
- Rhodiola rosea L. subsp. arctica (Boriss.) Á.Löve & D.Löve
- Rhodiola coccinea (Royle) Boriss.
- Rhodiola heterodonta (Hook.f. & Thomson) Boriss.
- Rhodiola iremelica Boriss.
- Rhodiola komarovii Boriss.
- Rhodiola linearifolia Boriss.
- Rhodiola pamiroalaica Boriss.
- Rhodiola pinnatifida Boriss.
- Rhodiola recticaulis Boriss.
- Hyssopus cuspidatus Boriss.
- Hyssopus tianschanicus Boriss.
- Mentha alaica Boriss.
- Mentha darvasica Boriss.
- Mentha pamiroalaica Boriss.
- Astragalus inopinatus Boriss.
Plants Named in Her Honor
Sometimes, other scientists name a new plant species after someone important. This is a way to honor their contributions to science. These succulent plants were named to honor Antonina Borissova:
- Sedum borissovae Balk.
- Sempervivum borissovae Wale 1946
