Antonio Alice (born February 23, 1886 – died August 24, 1943) was an Argentine artist. He was famous for painting portraits. In 1904, he won a special art award called the Prix de Rome.

Early Life and Art Beginnings

Antonio Alice was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His family came from Italy. His father was an immigrant and could barely read or write. Antonio's two sisters, Matilde and Santina, often posed for his paintings.

Antonio was expelled from school because he loved to draw in his textbooks. People thought he was impossible to teach! After leaving school, he worked as a shoeblack, shining shoes.

When he was 11, Antonio was sketching pictures of Gauchos while shining shoes. A man named Cupertino del Campo saw his talent. Del Campo later became the director of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires.

Cupertino del Campo sent Antonio to study with the painter Decoroso Bonifanti. This was in 1897, and it was Antonio's first painting lesson.

In 1904, Antonio won the Prix de Rome (Premio Roma). This important award allowed him to study art in Europe. He went to the Royal Academy of Painting in Turin, Italy. There, he learned from famous artists like Giacomo Grosso. During his four years at the Academy, he won three Gold Medals.

His painting La muerte de Güemes (The Death of Güemes) won a Gold Medal. This was at the 1910 Centenary of National Independence Exposition. The government of Salta Province later bought this painting for display.

In 1915, Antonio Alice won another big award. He received the Medal of Honor for paintings. This was at the Panama–Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California, USA. Three years later, he showed 60 of his paintings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
