Antonio Manrique de Lara was an important Spanish noble and military leader. He lived a long time ago, dying in 1535. He was known for being the 2nd Duke of Nájera. He also served as the Viceroy of Navarre from 1516 to 1521. A viceroy was like a governor who ruled a region for the king or queen.
Antonio was the second son of Pedro Manrique de Lara. His father was a powerful military leader. Antonio's mother was Guiomar de Castro.
His father became the 1st Duke of Nájera in 1482, thanks to King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Queen Isabella I of Castile. When his father passed away in 1515, Antonio became the 2nd Duke. He was also the 3rd Count of Treviño. In 1519, he received a special honor: he became a knight in the Order of the Golden Fleece, given by King Charles I of Spain.
In 1516, Antonio was appointed as the viceroy of Navarre by Cardinal Cisneros. His job was to bring peace to this newly conquered kingdom. However, he ruled very strictly. This made him unpopular with the people of Navarre.
When Henry II, the son of the former King of Navarre, sent a large army to take back his kingdom, the people of Navarre supported him. This army was made up of French and Navarrese soldiers, led by General André de Foix. In less than three weeks, almost all of Navarre was retaken.
