Antonio Pettigrew (born November 3, 1967 – died August 10, 2010) was an American runner. He was known for his speed in the 400 meters race.

Antonio Pettigrew was born in Macon, Georgia. He became a talented athlete.

College Athletics and First Big Wins

While attending St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina, Pettigrew was a top college runner. He won the 400-meter race four times in the NCAA Division II championships.

He became well-known at the 1991 World Championships. There, he won a gold medal in the 400-meter race. He also earned a silver medal as part of the 4 x 400 meters relay team.

Olympic Games and Later Career

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Pettigrew and his team won a gold medal in the 4 × 400 m relay. After their win, he threw his running shoes to the crowd. Later, this medal was removed due to rule violations. Other relay medals from World Championships were also removed for similar reasons.

Antonio Pettigrew's Passing

Antonio Pettigrew passed away at age 42. This happened in Chatham County, North Carolina, on August 10, 2010. At the time of his death, he was an assistant coach. He worked with the track and field team at the University of North Carolina.
