Antonio de Vea's Early Life and Military Career
Antonio de Vea was born into a noble family. His family lived in Milagro, a town in the Kingdom of Navarre, Spain. Before his famous sea journey, he had a military career. He served as a soldier in different places. These included Portugal, Catalonia (a region in Spain), and the Spanish Netherlands.
The Important Journey to Patagonia (1675-1676)
Antonio de Vea's most well-known achievement was his expedition. He led a group of explorers to the fjords and channels of Patagonia. This trip took place between 1675 and 1676. The main goal was to explore and map this part of southern Chile.
Mapping Southern Chile's Coastline
During his expedition, Antonio de Vea created a very important map. This map showed the many islands and waterways of southern Chile. It was a huge step forward for map-making in that area. His map was so good that no new Spanish maps of Patagonia's west coast were made for a long time. It wasn't until José de Moraleda y Montero explored the area much later, in the late 1700s, that new maps appeared.
