Antrim: A Historic Company Town
Antrim is a former company town located about a mile southwest of Mancelona. A company town is a place where a company built homes and stores for its workers. In Antrim, a charcoal furnace was built in 1882. The village was first called "Furnaceville" because of this furnace. Its train station was simply named "Furnace."
Later, the company that owned the furnace changed hands. The village and the train station were then renamed Antrim. Many people who settled here came from Kentucky to work in the local iron-making plant.
Lakes of the North Community
Lakes of the North is a community that is partly located within Mancelona Township. It's a defined area for counting people, and in 2010, about 925 people lived there. Part of this community also extends into a nearby area called Star Township.
