About Anupama Kundoo
Anupama Kundoo studied architecture at the Sir J. J. College of Architecture at the University of Mumbai in India. She finished her degree in 1989. Later, in 1996, she received a special award called the Vastu Shilpa Foundation Fellowship. This was for her ideas on how to design communities that are good for the environment. She then earned her PhD from Technische Universität Berlin in Germany in 2008.
Her Work as an Architect
In 1990, Anupama Kundoo started her own architecture practice in Auroville, India. She designed and built many buildings there until 2002. Her designs focused on using less energy and water.
Teaching Around the World
Anupama Kundoo has taught architecture at many universities. She taught at Technische Universität Berlin and Technische Universität Darmstadt in Germany in 2005. After that, she was a professor at Parsons The New School for Design in New York until 2011. She then moved to Australia to teach at the University of Queensland. In 2014, she went to Europe. She started working at the European School of Architecture and Technology at the Universidad Camilo José Cela in Madrid, Spain.
What Makes Her Buildings Special?
Anupama Kundoo's way of designing buildings is very unique. She studies different materials to find ones that have a small impact on the environment. Her main idea is to use "waste materials" and work with "unskilled local people." This helps both the environment and the community.
The Wall House
One of her most famous buildings is her own home, called the "Wall House." She built it in 2000 in Auroville. It's designed for shared living and cost about one million Rupees. The house has an L-shape and a courtyard in the middle. It mixes modern ideas with traditional Indian building styles. She used local materials like compressed earth, concrete, and steel. The bathroom is open to the sky, blending the inside with the outside garden.
A full-sized copy of her Wall House was built by hand. It was shown at a big art and architecture event called the Venice Biennale of Architecture. The New York Times newspaper called it "a gem among rubble," meaning it was a beautiful and special design.
The Liberty Project
Another interesting project by Anupama Kundoo is called "Liberty." It's a special reading place that works like a free library. She created it using three types of trees placed in the center of a square space. The tree trunks and branches are made from steel. The "leaves" are made from old, recycled books! The floor is made of concrete. This project was shown in Barcelona, Spain, from June to September 2014.
