Why is it Called Anvil Island?

The name "Anvil Island" was given on June 14, 1792. It was named by Captain George Vancouver, a famous explorer. He wrote in his journal that the island looked like an anvil. An anvil is a heavy block of metal that blacksmiths use.

The Indigenous Squamish people have their own name for the island. They call it Lhaxwm. This island was a very important place for spiritual training for the Squamish people. Their stories say a serpent lived at the top of the island's peak.

What Does Anvil Island Look Like?
