Aoraia senex is a special kind of moth that belongs to the Hepialidae family. This moth is found only in New Zealand, meaning it is endemic there. You can find it living in the South Island.
This unique moth was first described in 1908. A scientist named George Vernon Hudson gave it its name. He studied specimens that were found by J. H. Lewis in a place called Central Otago.
Meet the Aoraia Senex Moth
The Aoraia senex moth is known for its interesting looks. Like all moths, it has wings and a body covered in tiny scales.
What Does it Look Like?
Male Aoraia senex moths have a wingspan of about 43 to 50 millimeters. That's about the length of a small paperclip.
Female moths are a bit different. They are described as sub-brachypterous. This means their wings are shorter and not as fully developed as the males'. Their wingspan is smaller, usually between 30 and 34 millimeters.
Both male and female moths have wings that are not very densely covered with scales. The female's wings are also narrower and come to a point at the end.
When Can You See It?
Adult Aoraia senex moths are usually seen flying between December and February. This is during the summer months in New Zealand. Unlike many moths that fly at night, these moths are active during the day.
