Central Otago is a special place in the middle of the Otago region, located on the South Island of New Zealand. Its motto is "A World of Difference," which really describes how unique it is!

This area is mostly covered by big mountain ranges. It also has the upper parts of the Clutha River and its smaller rivers. A wide, flat area called the Maniototo plateau is also part of Central Otago. This plateau sits between the Taieri River and the Manuherikia River, which flows into the Clutha.

Central Otago has very cold winters and hot, dry summers. Not many people live here. The first Europeans came to settle after gold was found at Gabriel's Gully in 1861. This discovery started the famous Central Otago goldrush.

Some of the towns and villages you can find here include Alexandra, Bannockburn, Clyde, Cromwell, Millers Flat, Naseby, Omakau, Ranfurly, Roxburgh, St. Bathans, and Wedderburn.

Since the 1800s, Central Otago has mainly focused on farming sheep, growing stone fruit (like peaches and apricots), and welcoming tourists. More recently, deer farms and vineyards (places where grapes are grown for wine) have become important.

Central Otago is the southernmost place in the world where wine is made for sale! Grapes like Riesling and Pinot noir grow very well here. As the grapevines get older, the wines from this area are expected to get even better.

How Central Otago Is Managed

Local Government in Central Otago

The local government for Central Otago is called the Central Otago District Council. It is based in the town of Alexandra. This council handles things like local services and rules for the area.

Another group, the Otago Regional Council, looks after bigger environmental issues. This includes making sure the air is clean and that there is enough clean water.
